VISION

To train the students so that they are strong in logic, which enables them to approach, analyze and solve any problem, both scientific and sociological, in an unbiased manner and to enhance the quantitative and analytical skill.

MISSION

  • To provide an environment where students can learn and become an efficient and accurate problem solver of Mathematics and Mathematical applications.
  • To make the students as Mathematical thinkers and enable them to become a long time learners of Mathematics.
  •  To make the students to have core knowledge and able to correlate this core mathematical knowledge with other disciplines.

OBJECTIVES

As Mathematics and its logic are the basis for the development of all sciences and humanities, it is natural that the department of Mathematics bears higher responsibilities. It has to take into consideration the rapid growth of technology globally without loss of the charm of pure Mathematics, which help fundamental research.

With this in mind the department aims a balanced approach giving equal importance of Pure and Applied Mathematics in both UG and PG courses. Accordingly the syllabus is periodically revised to include the latest relevant topics giving scope to research areas.

History/ Timeline

  • The department was established in the year 1947 with intermediate program and BA Mathematics. These were replaced respectively by PUC-1956 and B.Sc.,(1957).
  • The Department is the earliest to have been accorded the status of PG teaching by no less an academician of the status of Dr.AL Mudaliar then Vice Chancellor of the university madras in the year 1958.
  • We are also proud to record here that the PG department of ours was headed by Prof.T.TotadriIyengar, an eminent mathematician of international standing who was the Professor of Dr.APJ AbdulKalam(The great scientist and former President of India).
  • Having been blessed by men of such erudition the department has witnessed steady growth and the college duly won her status of autonomy(in 1978) among the first few colleges to have achieved the distinction.

Salient Features

  • The Madras University’s Research Extension center started functioning from the Madura College from 1958, under the leadership of Dr.M.Venkatraman, a well-known Mathematician and Reader in mathematics of the Madras University.
  • Affiliation was secured for M.sc.,Mathematics in the year 1958. In 1966 th college came under the Madurai Kamaraj University and became Autonomous in 1978.
